Shimano makes two different cleats to fit their SPD pedals; the M-51 and the M-56. This is the M-51, and they release by twisting your heel to the outside only.

The M-56 will release by twisting your heel in either direction, and are much better suited for spin class and stationary bike applications. What are you, an old lady?
